From a farming background and qualifying in 1990 my veterinary career started at my local practice, and over the next decade achieved competancy in many areas of medicine and surgery. I worked for nearly 7 years in a practice where busy open surgeries were the norm. Surgically I am proficient in all the routine surgical proceedures and have completed mny of the more unusual. In the past 7 years I have worked solo at Vets Now which has further added to my surgical experience..

So why am I locumming?

I have several parts to my life - family, travel and work.

Family
My wife is a veterinary surgeon in Somerset and we have 2 children aged 15 and 17. For the past 17 years we have adapted our lives to fit in with family life; locum work fits in with this

Travel.
I volunteer for many things, but over the past 15 years this has crystalised in cycling. I now voluntarily organise at least 5 holidays a year for both the Tandem Club and the Cyclists Touring Club. These involve advertising, booking  and looking after up to 600 people a year. Most  of these holidays have involved family holidays where many many families have been introduced to the joys of cycling as a group. I have hired campsites and chateaus and led tours to China, India and America. I have a 90% return rate and book up very very quickly which in an open market says something about my client care. Jennifer Worth AKA Call the Midwife came on my family holidays for 7 years with her grandson Sam. To continue doing these would be incompatable to a full time job. If you are interested have a look at www.cyclingukholidays.com which has many pictures and tour descriptions.

 Work
From my CV, it can be seen that I have worked in a wide variety of practices from single handed branch surgeries to multivet practices and until March 2015 worked for Vets Now on a part time capacicity in the Bristol clinic,. Even though I work part time I am fully involved, I was on their employee forum, hold sessions on their website, offering advise, and in 2011 was recognsed with an award for contribution to the company.
I am highly communicative and strongly believe in client care. I discuss cases freely not only for my benefit but with the understanding that when I'm not around my coleagues need to comprehend the case. My background in AHVLA has  also left an indelible sense of organisation to my work
My background of leading cycle tours to far flung places with people who I have never met but with whom I have to communicate and look after means that I can adapt easily to new situations and work through problems.

In conclusion I can work in all areas of small animal practice and with my farming background and a spell in Animal Health may even consider the odd week or two of TB testing.
